The Baghdad Railway was a magnificent transport project built with German capital and engineering in Ottoman territories in the early twentieth century, setting major European powers against each other, aimed at connecting Istanbul to the Persian Gulf.

The Birth of a Dream: German Capital in Ottoman Lands

Also known as the Berlin–Baghdad Railway, this massive project formally began construction in 1903 and was only completed in 1940, a full 37 years later—an extraordinary engineering adventure. The financing and technical infrastructure of the project were largely undertaken by the Deutsche Bank and the German construction firm Philipp Holzmann; the government of Kaiser Wilhelm II explicitly supported this undertaking as part of Germany's strategy to expand its economic influence eastward. On the Ottoman side, the railway was seen as one of the modernization initiatives of the reign of Abdülhamit II, aligning with the empire's goal to connect its Anatolian and Mesopotamian territories with iron rails and attract European capital to the country.

In fact, the roots of the Baghdad Railway extend far back to 1888. The Anatolia Railway Company, founded that year, was again backed by the Deutsche Bank and Georg von Siemens, a member of the bank's executive board. The company completed the line running from Haydarpaşa through Izmit and Arifiye to Ankara by the end of 1892, and its branch diverging from Eskişehir to Konya by 1896. The Baghdad Railway Company, established in 1904, took over this Konya line with the task of extending it via Adana and Aleppo all the way to Baghdad; thus the long-desired Istanbul–Baghdad railway corridor finally became a concrete project.

The line began at the Haydarpaşa Station in Istanbul, proceeded southward through Konya, crossed the Taurus Mountains to reach Adana and Aleppo, and from there extended via Mosul to Baghdad and ultimately aimed to connect to Basra on the Persian Gulf coast. The main line between Konya and Baghdad was approximately 1,597 kilometers long; in addition, branch lines to the ports of Mersin and Iskenderun were also constructed. Upon completion, the project had 189 stations in operation; today (excluding the Syrian portion), approximately 140 of them remain operational.

The Taurus Mountains: A Route That Pushed Engineering to Its Limits

The most challenging section of the line was undoubtedly the crossing of the Taurus Mountains between Konya and Adana. In this section, engineers were forced to cut 37 tunnels through the steep and rugged terrain; the longest of these, the Ayran Tunnel, reached 4,905 meters by itself. These tunnels lined up in succession over an approximately 12-kilometer distance, representing a unique challenge in railway engineering of that era.

The most magnificent structure of this section was the Varda Bridge (Varda Viaduct). Construction of the bridge began in 1905, its main structure was completed in 1907, and technical details continued until 1912; the line itself opened to traffic in 1916, while the bridge's official inauguration only took place on October 9, 1918. The construction was undertaken by Philipp Holzmann & Cie, again financed by the Deutsche Bank, with German engineer Winkler in charge, and after his death, the work was taken over by Ottoman engineer of Greek origin Nicholas Mavrogordato. The stone viaduct, consisting of eleven arch spans, was 172 meters long and 98 meters high; after construction materials were delivered by ship to Mersin Port, they were transported across the mountainous terrain by camel. This single detail alone illustrates how ambitious and difficult the project was for its time.

The engineers in the Taurus crossing had to contend not only with steep slopes and hard rock, but also with the difficulties of providing materials, labor, and logistics in a geography where transportation was nearly impossible. Much of the equipment was shipped from Europe to Mediterranean ports and then transported across the mountainous terrain by road or pack animal. This years-long endeavor was not merely a technical achievement; it was also evidence of a stubborn struggle against nature with the limited means of the period.

Great Powers on a Chessboard: An Iron Line

The Baghdad Railway was not just a story of technical success; it was also one of the most striking reflections of the balance of power in Europe before World War I. Germany's approach to the Persian Gulf and thus to the Indian route through this line caused serious concern in London. According to an evaluation recounted by historian Morris Jastrow, frequently cited, the Baghdad Railway and the Persian Gulf falling into German hands meant something like "a 42-centimeter gun aimed at India." Britain succeeded in limiting Germany's access to Mesopotamian oil fields and Persian Gulf ports through diplomatic agreements and subsequent military control.

Russia and France also watched the project with suspicion from their own interests, uncomfortable with Germany's growing economic and strategic influence in Ottoman territories. Access to oil resources, which entity the railway would serve, and how spheres of influence in the region would be divided became one of the most sensitive topics in pre-war diplomacy. In this regard, the Baghdad Railway became far more than a mere transportation infrastructure; it transformed into a concrete symbol of imperial competition.

From the Ottoman perspective, this competition meant both an opportunity and a risk. On the one hand, European capital and technology were modernizing the empire's transportation network, economically backward Anatolian and Mesopotamian territories were being connected to world trade; on the other hand, foreign competition over the line's route, financing, and operating rights provided the basis for Ottoman territories to become a scene of power struggle among great nations.

An Incomplete Line in the Shadow of War and Ultimate Completion

When World War I broke out, the line was not yet complete: as of 1915, due to unfinished tunnel work especially in the Taurus Mountains, there was approximately a 480-kilometer gap in the line. This deficiency largely prevented the railway from providing the strategic and logistic benefits hoped for during the war; Ottoman and German forces faced serious difficulties transporting troops and materials to the Mesopotamian front due to these gaps.

The treaties signed after the war largely eliminated Germany's property rights on the line, and German companies' oil concessions were transferred to other victorious powers, primarily France. Thus the pre-war Anglo-German economic competition was resolved through actual control rather than agreement. The line's construction continued at a slow pace and finally on July 17, 1940, the famous Taurus Express completed its first uninterrupted journey from Istanbul to Baghdad, symbolically announcing the project's completion.

An Engineering Legacy That Remains to This Day

Today, the Baghdad Railway's tunnels, viaducts, and especially the Varda Bridge in the Taurus Mountains are impressive destinations for both engineering history enthusiasts and travelers visiting the region. These structures in the Adana area vividly demonstrate how, more than a century ago, with human hands and often primitive methods, seemingly insurmountable geographic obstacles were overcome. The Baghdad Railway is not merely a stretch of track; it is a legacy intertwined with imperial ambitions, engineering courage, and the geopolitical calculations that shaped the modern history of the Middle East—still offering lessons to be learned.

Today a traveler progressing along the Adana–Konya route unknowingly passes through traces of a past stretching back over a century: tunnels cutting through the steep slopes of the Taurus, stone viaducts spanning valleys, and rails that once carried the ambitions of empires. The Baghdad Railway's story is one of engineering achievement pushing the boundaries of technology and showing how great powers' competing interests can become intertwined; it is a rich heritage awaiting discovery for both travelers and history enthusiasts alike.
